1. Prairie Lakes Community Center

Prairie Lakes Community Center has a lot to offer its members and visitors. It has a state-of-the-art exercise facility with a sauna, whirlpool, and locker rooms. It is open early and late to accommodate all workout schedules. It has a wide selection of strength equipment as well as cardio machines with individual receivers and televisions.

The Park District also offers a variety of classes for people of all ages, including Zumba and kickboxing. Sarg explained that the Park District has made an effort to expand its class offerings within the last five years after receiving feedback from residents.

The facility is a short walk to the Mountain View Adventure Center with mini-golf, batting cages, and skate/BMX parks. The golf course is also nearby along with a walking and jogging track, basketball and volleyball courts, and soccer and cricket fields. Several rooms in the complex can be rented for parties and events. It also houses administrative offices, a health club, and the Community Center.

2. Prairie Lakes Aquatic Center

The 27,000-square-foot Prairie Lakes Aquatic Center is located at 515 E. Thacker Steet and is connected to the community center. It features an 8-lane, 25-yard competitive lap pool and a splash pad. It also offers a 2,000-square-foot warm water wellness pool with three lanes, seating, and hydrotherapy jets in the 3-1/2–4-foot deep section. This pool is home to the park district’s Warriors championship swim team and year-round Swim School, Water Fitness classes, and special events.

This new facility also includes a multipurpose/party room; men’s and women’s locker rooms and six convenient family changing rooms. In addition, the facility’s outdoor patio area offers a beautiful view of the lake.

The park also includes two retention ponds that are free to fish in daily; a full basketball court and sand volleyball court, a playground, picnic shelter, and tables, an exercise path, and plenty of space for soccer, cricket, frisbee, and kite flying. The park is open to the public year-round. Discover more exciting places here.

3. Prairie Lakes Theater

Located at 515 E Thacker Street, the Prairie Lakes Theater is one of Des Plaines Park District’s hidden gems. It hosts a variety of shows put on by local community groups and organizations. It is also home to the Big Noise Theatre Company, Footlighters Theatre Company, CYT, and the Des Plaines Park District Community Concert Band.

The theater is a modern, clean facility with plenty of seats that have perfect sightlines. It also has a box office and lobby and can be rented for parties and events. We recently attended a performance by the Big Noise Theatre Company and it was excellent. The theater is located in a building with other venues such as a gymnasium so it looked and felt a lot like attending a play at a high school – nothing wrong with that!

Goose Lake Prairie State Natural Area preserves a fragment of the vast prairie that once covered much of Illinois. The site, about 20 miles northwest of Chicago, offers an educational look back in time, as well as a place for nature lovers and recreational enthusiasts to visit and explore.

4. Prairie Lakes Golf Course

Golf enthusiasts are sure to appreciate the Prairie Lakes golf course. The facility offers an 18-hole golf course, a driving range, and a fee-based short-game practice area. It also features a clubhouse and Club Casa Cafe restaurant.

A staffed pro shop is available for golf equipment and accessories. The staff can offer lessons, too. The course is a great option for beginners, families, and better players looking to sharpen their skills. Its greens are well-groomed, but the fairways are a little rough at times.
