McCollum Park

McCollum Park is an amazing park with a variety of sports and outdoor recreational facilities. The park is a great place to run, walk, bike, and picnic.

The park is currently undergoing an improvement project to add more recreation opportunities for everyone. The new Adventure Falls playground and rebranded mini golf course will open later this year, along with revamped sports courts with LED lighting. A great post ahead.

Playgrounds

The playgrounds at McCollum Park are the perfect place for your children to burn off some of that extra energy. Whether you’re looking for a fun dragon-themed playground or a place to play with your little ones on the swings, this park has something for everyone.

This universally accessible playground is a great place for kids of all ages to play and features a clubhouse, wide ramps, and two zip lines. There are also several ground-level activities, and all the equipment is wheelchair accessible.

This park also has a 1.2-mile paved walking trail that spans the perimeter of the park. You can see all the sports fields and other facilities on this route. There are benches along the way if you need to take a break from all the action. The park also has tennis courts, a miniature golf course, and a large playground. These are all open to the public and free of charge.

Tennis Courts

The park district listened to community feedback and developed the McCollum Park Improvement Project, a multi-phase plan that includes a new sprayground, outdoor pickleball courts, and infrastructure replacements. The sprayground will include three distinct splash areas to meet the needs of all ages. The existing tennis courts, concession plaza, and perimeter pathway will be reconstructed to provide additional recreation opportunities.

On the tennis and pickleball courts, the contractor continued to work on the 10-foot tall fencing and concrete footings for the light poles. The contractors also began the process of installing the acrylic color coating with court lines on the tennis and pickleball courts.

Construction on the new tennis and pickleball courts is expected to be complete in August, but the current tennis courts remain closed during this time. Park district staff are working with the contractor to schedule the opening of the new courts as soon as possible. Visit another area in town here.

Basketball Courts

McCollum Park is Downers Grove’s largest park, and it features plenty of outdoor recreation options. The facility has a large playground, a 1.2-mile paved walking trail, and a variety of sports fields. It also has tennis, sand volleyball, and basketball courts, as well as a fun putt-putt golf course called Miner Mike’s.

The park’s basketball courts are lighted for nighttime use, making it a great place to practice hoops or play pickleball. You can even sign up for a league here!

This winter, the basketball courts will be converted into an ice rink as the Downers Grove Park District continues work on McCullom Park. This flagship park will get a new sprayground, rebranded miniature golf course, and revamped sports courts with LED lighting. In addition, eight of the park’s tennis courts will be converted into pickleball courts. This is the second of three projects to improve McCullom Park, and it’s expected to be completed in 2023.

Baseball Fields

McCollum Park is the Park District’s flagship outdoor athletic complex. The 50-acre park features 2 baseball fields, 2 softball fields, 4 soccer/multi-purpose fields, 6 tennis courts (with 8 dedicated pickleball courts), 3 lighted sand volleyball courts, 18-hole miniature golf, and a large playground. The park also offers a 1.2-mile paved walking trail and several wooded picnic areas.

A major improvement project is underway to upgrade and add new facilities to the park, including a sprayground with three distinct splash areas for tots, families, and teens, required showers within the existing restrooms, infrastructure replacements, and a widened and resurfaced perimeter pathway. This improvement project is the result of community feedback received over a number of years.

The facility does get very busy during community events, especially on weekends. It is recommended that you arrive early to ensure you are able to find parking and that you have time to enjoy all the amenities this park has to offer. Next article.
